Website Interface customization tips

eZ Publish design contest 2007 started few weeks ago. Basically task is very simple: make nice design. Main price is really great. You can win a free ticket for eZ Conference 2007 and learn about what is happening in the information business from a content management, business and technology standpoint. And the most important get first-hand information from eZ developers, eZ partners and community members. As eZ crew member I can not join contest for obvious reasons ;) however I can share few tips that will make your designing process easier.

eZ Publish and EXIF support

EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format, and is a standard for storing interchange information in image files, especially those using JPEG compression. Most digital cameras now use the EXIF format. eZ Publish can analyse uploaded images and store information about image files in database (ezimage datatype). EXIF the PHP extension needs to be available in your environment. See PHP manual for more information.

eZ Publish 3.9 and the eZ Open Document Format Extension

One of the great features in eZ Publish 3.9 is an extension that supports integration with the Open Document Format. In this short tutorial I will explain how to configure the eZODF extension to work on the Windows platform.

eZ publish: Custom root node

One of many key features of eZ publish is flexibility. You can customize almost anything from content structure to output presentation. In this short tutorial I will show how to specify a custom default root node class.

eZ publish 3.8: New Custom Edit Handler

One of many new features in eZ publish 3.8 is the ability to use a custom edit handler. A custom edit handler is an extension (a PHP class) that enables you to perform actions based on user choices during the object editing process. You can add some extra POST data processing, connect to an external database , update data and much more, depending on your needs.

Silverlight support in eZ Publish

As Microsoft Silverlight technology is becoming increasingly popular, it will be supported in the upcoming eZ Publish 4.1 release. Sites using the Website Interface and eZ Flow will include a Silverlight class and the corresponding view templates. Simply upload .xap files (compressed Silverlight package) as attributes in Silverlight objects; when such an object is viewed by a site visitor, your Silverlight media is loaded in the web browser (provided that the visitor has the Silverlight browser plugin installed). This is similar to how eZ Publish already supports .swf files via the Flash class. More information will be available as the next eZ Publish release date approaches.

A roadmap for the next eZ Publish releases is now available. eZ Publish 4.1, the next major release, will include the new Online Editor, as was previously mentioned in Community Newsletter #1/2008. The new Online Editor will have various enhancements regarding usability and the user interface, and will support Internet Explorer 7 for Windows Vista. eZ Publish 4.1 is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2008.
